In November 2015, protests began in Ethiopia’s largest region of Oromia. Protestors oppose a government development plan that threatens to displace Oromo farmers. Security forces responded to the largely peaceful protests with lethal force, often firing into crowds. At least 400 protestors have been killed and thousands have been detained. Many of those killed were students. Protestors have continued to spread due to the brutal response and longstanding Oromo grievances. Protestors have been beaten or tortured in detention and many remain in detention without charge. There have been no credible investigations or justice for these abuses by Ethiopian security forces.
