Sumitomo Electric Sintered Alloy Ltd. (OSS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and positioned as the core base of its sintered product business, has established the Powder Metallurgy Engineering Center (PMEC) at its main plant (in Okayama) and held an inauguration ceremony on May 9, 2013.
Sintered products are made mainly from iron powder by using powder metallurgy technology. Since sintering is suitable for high-volume production of intricately-shaped, high-accuracy structural parts, sintered products are used widely as automotive parts for which high reliability and steady supply are required, as well as for home electric appliances and industrial machinery. Under a business scheme in which Sumitomo Electric assumes business planning and sales while OSS assumes development and production, the Sumitomo Electric Group is globally running sintered product business in Japan and many other countries in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Aiming to further strengthen our product/material evaluation capabilities, Sumitomo Electric decided to newly establish the PMEC as one of our global core technology centers and recently completed it. Provided with product/material evaluation equipment, product display spaces, and education/training rooms, the PMEC is one of the largest technical centers in the sintered business field. This new facility will appeal Sumitomo Electric Group’s technological capabilities and strong user support system to conventional and potential customers, thereby contributing to further expansion of our sintered products business.
Sumitomo Electric will consecutively collect the test/evaluation equipment dispersed in various production bases for the PMEC and upgrade its product/material evaluation capabilities in response to customer needs.
