India’s emissions clampdown spurs step-change in bus segment

Major Indian cities are showing serious interest in electric buses, with demand being driven by state-run transport services. By Freddie Holmes

The Indian government is making a firm push to curb emissions arising from the transportation sector, with  targeted efforts to refresh the fleet. From April 2020, automakers in the country will have to leapfrog Bharat Stage (BS) V emissions standards, and instead move straight from BS IV to BS VI. It is a tall order, but appears to have had a positive effect on powertrain electrification in the country.

For incumbent automaker Tata Motors, the jump to BS VI has enforced the single largest capex investment the company has ever performed, according to Chief Executive, Guenter Butschek. As…
